Language Development II - Week 1: 1.1 Lexical Resource in Context (Taxonomy of Lexical Items)


  1. Tutorial: Task 2

    1. Textual analysis activities
    2. Preparation activities
    3. Speaking activities
    4. Dictionary and matching activities

    In groups of 4 or 5, select one of the above activities. Plan one activity of the selected type and carry out in the class.

  2. Task : Textual Analysis Activities

    Members :

    Activities : Grouping

    Method :
    1. Divide the students into a group of 3 people in each group
    2. Write the categories on the pieces of paper in each group with different categories before handing it to them.
    Example : Transportation, Food, Gadgets
    3. List 5 item based on the categories.
    4. Construct sentences based on the item written.
    5. Share the sentence with the whole class.
    6. Correct the sentence if its wrong or unsuitable and provide a more suitable sentence (teacher's job).

    Benifits :
    1. Help students to think more.
    2. Polish the student's sentence construction

    Task : Textual Analysis Activity

    Activities : Explore the text

    Method :
    1. The class is divided into few groups with at least 3 members in a group.
    2. The teacher provides suitable articles for each group. The articles must be at the medium levelled, not too easy or not too hard.
    Suggested articles can be on these topics : Transportation, Food, Gadgets
    3. The teacher asks the students to extract the essence and the main ideas of the texts. Provide the students with 20 minutes to get this done.
    4. The groups must present the essence and the main ideas of the articles in mahjong papers in the form of iThink maps. Further explanations must be included during the presentation.
    5. Other groups give comments on the presentations.
    6. Group with the best presentation (visually, intonation, pronunciation and voice projection) wins the game.
    Benefits :
    1. Enables the students to build the confidence level and their self-esteem.
    2. Creates a good cooperation among team members.
    3. Enables the students put on their thinking caps.

  4. Task : Speaking activities

    Activity: Story Completion
    1. The activity starts by the teacher begins to tell a story, but after a few sentences he or she stops narrating.
    2. Each student then are required to continue narrating the story from the point where the previous one stopped.
    3. Each student is supposed to add from two to four sentences. Students can add new characters, events, descriptions or twist the plot and so on.
    4. Example: The teacher will start the story (eg. : Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child. Once she gave her a little riding hood of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called 'Little Red Riding Hood.')
    5. Then, each and every student will continue the story…(eg. : One day, the Little Red Riding Hood stumbles across a beautiful glass shoe while on the way to visit her grandmother….) and so on.

    1. Foster critical imaginative thinking and quick decision making.
    2. Learn how to express and justify themselves in polite, correct and appropriate ways
    3. Provide maximum opportunity to students to speak comprehensive and smooth English language.

    TARGETED STUDENT : Standard 4-6
    1. Divide the students into four groups.
    2. Make four partitions on the whiteboard and name the groups.
    3. Prepare two baskets. One basket contains many cards of noun while another basket contains many cards of adjective.
    4. Set the time within 3 minutes. Then, one representative will take one card from each of the baskets and paste them onto the whiteboard.
    5. Combine the words to form a complete sentence.


    Activity : GUESS THE PROVERB

    Group members :

    Method :
    1) A conductor prepared a stack of graphic cards.
    2) Split the students into a group of 4.
    3) The conductor will show a graphic card and each group will be given a chance to answer what idioms or phrases with its meaning that are related to the graphical card.
    4) In case the group did not know the meaning of the proverbs or idioms that they give, they will only get half of the mark.
    5) The answer cannot be repeated by other groups.
    6) The group that give the same answer will be eliminated for that round.
    7) The group with the highest mark will win the game.

    Idioms and phrases that can be stated:
    - Bite your lip : repress an emotion, stifle laughter or a retort
    - Curl your lip : raise a corner of your upper lip to show contempt, sneer
    - Hang on someone’s lips : listen attentively to someone
    - Pay lip service to something: Express approval of or support for something without taking any significant action.

    - Enhance the usage of idioms or proverbs in daily life.
    - Train students to think faster.
