Teaching Listening

  1. 1. The characteristics of the listening process are spontaneity, context, visual clues, listener's response and speaker's adjustment.
    2. The models of teaching listening are the bottom-up model and the top-down model.
    3. The common activities in teaching listening are the pre-listening activities, the while-listening activities and the post-listening activities. The pre-listening activities include predicting, setting the scene, listening for the gist and listening for specific information. The while-listening activities include listen and tick, listen and sequence, listen and act, and so on. The post-listening activities include multiple choice questions, answering questions, note-taking and gap-filling, and dictogloss.

    3. The common activities in teaching learning are in the three teaching stages which are pre-listening activities, while-listening activities and post-listening activities. The activities in the pre-listening activities are predicting, setting the scene, listening for the gist and listening for specific information. The while-listening stage includes the activities of listen and tick, listen and sequence, listen and act, listen and fill, listen and draw and listen and guess. The activities of post listening are multiple choice questions, answering questions, note taking and gap filling and dictogloss.
